I love the melding of new school feel and old school music in this energetic onslaught of instruments and styles. Tons of energy, love it.

  • Caves Of Burgundy by boris and the saltlicks

mmmm, boris and the saltlicks! need i say more?
"caves of burgundy" was the first song i heard by this band when i discovered them in the kbga library and i was hooked immediately. the entire album "cactusman vs. the blue demon" is a solid eargasm full of splendid americana lovin'!
currently based in santa fe, boris mccutcheon is the lead singer/songwriter and is backed by the band "the salt licks". boris plays the guitar, harmonica, and mandolin - and in my opinion shits musical gold.

  • Girl From The North Country (With Johnny Cash) by Bob Dylan

    Filed Under:

    i love this song.
above all else, i love that it is quite possibly the world's most awkward duet ever.
this version of "girl from the north country" is emotional, raw, and genuine. it even pulls a little bit at my few remaining heartstrings that haven't yet been hardened into a cold, black, stone from years of chronic cynicism.
bob dylan made the song, but johnny cash makes it awesome.
    listen, absorb, rinse, repeat...

  • 4 People by Solillaquists of Sound review

My favorite song, 4 People, from there epic album released this summer has all the ingredients of the Solillaquists of Sound that I love. A tight, rhythmic male lead that carefully enunciate every syllable, an intricate solid beat that builds the energy of the song, and an amazing singer that defies explanation. I almost labeled her as a backup singer, but then I thought about how the rest of the band is there to support her. Seriously, once her voice comes on you never want her to stop. A beautiful full range, and a versatile style, she adds a huge amount of soul and awesomness to this song and the rest of there incredible album, No More Heroes. Solillaquists of Sound have pushed themselves ahead of the rest of the artists waiting in line to get into my favorite artists lists (where all the cool kids hang out). Spend some time checking out the rest of the samples of there work at the links below and don't forget to stop by there site. What do you think of this? Is this the best song you've heard all month? If so, leave a comment. If not, let us know why not and what you're loving in the comments. Thanks!

  • smokin by Jeremiah James

there's a million reasons why i love jeremiah james, but we'll just highlight a few:

1 - gerrad suggested we go to the top hat to check out some live tunes and as we sipped our dollar drafts, jeremiah james sang about sipping dollar drafts

2 - he greeted us all with hugs backstage when we all ambushed him to tell him how sweet we thought the band was

    3 - super-awesome road tripping music!

4 - he makes no attempt at appearing civilized - his bolo + beard + boots triple-threat are 100% cowboy

5 - i've played "smokin" so many times i had to share it here with my invisible audience

he was amazing live and i hope he rolls back through missoula soon! check out his website at jeremiahjamesgang.com (quote below) if you'd like to learn more:

"Jeremiah James is a singer/songwriter with a new take on an old style. His music is a blend of honkytonk, sad bastard balladeer, folk, americana, acoustic roadhouse, and country. His booming baritone voice combined with heartfelt, bourbon soaked lyrics create a sound that's unique, yet comfortingly familiar. He currently has a hangover in Boise, ID."

p.s. - dont judge me for the screen shot i took off his homepage

  • Ride On (Ft. Raashan Ahmad) by Dragon Fli Empire

dragon fli empire caught my eye in the kbga studio simply because it was some new hip-hop i hadn't listened to before and i liked the fact that they're out of calgary, canada.  i randomly played this song on air because i liked the jazzy beginning and was thrilled when they threw shout-outs to not only MISSOULA, but also eightrack mind (from bozeman), and crown city rockers (from california)! i've been hooked ever since. i love all 3 bands and i vote for a show here in missoula featuring all 3 plus sweatshop union all at once! we'll call it missoulapalooza!
"the very next morning we said goodbye - hit the road again to the land of big sky - ... - straight to missoula where they're cooler than icecaps..."

  • wandering wanderer by Don cavalli

don cavalli is damn good. it's that simple. i discovered "cryland" in the studio when all the bright pretty album colors caught my eye. i cued up a song and the bright exciting music made me dance around like the nerd i am.  this album rocks because it's everything you'll ever need - it's got a retro feel with a little blues and rockabilly mixed in. it's upbeat and fresh and catchy as hell. cryland was recorded in paris for everloving records and i strongly urge you to listen to the whole album. each song is a little dancing rainbow of musical love. i chose to feature "wandering wanderer" because i think it sums up all of don cavalli and "cryland" in one fell swoop.

  • Gipsy Blooz by Shukar Collective

shukar collective is another one of those delicious bands that patiently awaited me in kbga's world music library.  i'm always a big fan of music that successfully hodgepodges traditional aspects with a modern flair - and these guys hit the spot! their romanian gypsy music is weird and unique and i have no clue what they're saying at any given point - which is exactly what makes them damn good!
the following is their review from last.fm which i'd say sums up shukar collective quite well:
"The Shukar Collective was born from the meeting of new generation musicians with the gypsy traditions of Shukar founders Napoleon, Tamango and Clasic. Shukar play ursari music (ursar means “bear tamer” or “bear handler”) using spoons, wooden barrels or darabouka to create a powerful and urgent sound that is emotional and soulful at the same time. Urban Gypsy combines Shukar’s original ursari music with the new technology of the collective, resulting in their distinctive sound."
also, check out some of their music videos on ye olde youtube - s.c. - "gypsy blooz" * s.c. - "malademna" * s.c. - "taraf"

  • We Free Again by Groundation

there's nothing groundation can do that i wont like! these guys rock dub and roots reggae in a way that's new and refreshing and damn good to dance around to! they hail from california and have stopped by missoula a few times - i last saw them at the other side. i was turned on to groundation by another dj from kbga who used to host the show "roots rally sound system". i challenged him to show me something fresh and interesting and i've been hooked ever since. i'm posting "we free again" because it's the first song i heard by groundation and i feel is a fair representation of their overall musical badassyness. once you've delved into a few of groundation's reggae albums, i reccomend checking out their ultimate dub baby "dub wars". also, fans of groundation will more than likely enjoy "rockamovya" - a groovin' reggae band that includes some members from groundation. mmm, baby!

  • Make It Rain by Tom Waits

this song, like the rest of the "real gone" album is (you guessed it) damn good! tom waits is awesome because he does what he wants when he wants and doesn't limit himself to any one genre or subject matter. the tom waits library covers everything from christmas cards for hookers to eating a chocolate jesus. his album "real gone" is gritty, awesome, and experimentally rockin'! this is his first album without piano and also features a handful of guest musicians - including les claypool. it's hard to choose just one song off this album to feature here, so i strongly reccomend checking out the whole thing. start with "make it rain", or "hoist that rag", or "dead and lovely", or "metropolitan glide", or "sins of my father", or....
"Since you're gone/ Deep inside it hurts/ I'm just another sad guest/ On this dark earth/ I want to believe/ In the mercy of the world again/ Make it rain, make it rain!"
